# Remove a Member from a Workspace

To take away someone's access to a workspace, you **deactivate** them. A deactivated member loses access to the workspace. Use this when a person leaves the team or should no longer be able to see or act in the workspace.

### Before you start

* You must have permission to manage members (admins and the workspace Owner can).
* To deactivate someone who is an **Admin**, you must be the workspace **Owner**. Admins can deactivate members but not other admins.
* You can't deactivate yourself, and the workspace **Owner** can't be deactivated. If the owner needs to leave, transfer ownership first - see Transfer ownership of a workspace.

### Steps

1. Click the workspace on the top left(, or your **avatar** in the top right corner) to open the menu, then select **Settings**.
2. In the Settings sidebar, under **Workspace**, select **Members**.
3. Find the person in the list and click the **⋮** (more) button at the end of their row.
4. Select **Deactivate**.
5. In the confirmation dialog ("Deactivate member"), read the warning that they will lose access to the workspace, then click **Deactivate** to confirm.

### What to expect

The person is deactivated right away and loses access to the workspace. Their entry stays visible in the Members list, shown in a dimmed (deactivated) state, rather than disappearing entirely.

### Troubleshooting

* **There's no Deactivate option in the ⋮ menu** → You may not have permission, you're looking at your own row, or the person is the workspace Owner (owners can't be deactivated). To deactivate an admin, you need to be the owner.
* **You only want to reduce their access, not remove it** → Lower their role instead.
* **The owner is leaving the team** → Deactivating the owner isn't possible. Transfer ownership to someone else first, then the former owner (now an admin) can be deactivated. See [Transfer Workspace Ownership](/guides/roles-and-permissions/transfer-workspace-ownership.md).
